Pain, Purpose, and Philanthropy: How Asphyxia and Postpartum Challenges Shaped My Path

My Path to Purpose

Growing up, my home was often filled with people as my parents generously opened our doors to those in need. While it sometimes felt overcrowded, I later realised many of these guests were not even our relatives. Despite the challenges, my parents continued to extend their kindness. Years later, life tested me profoundly. Experiencing asphyxia with my newborn and suffering from postpartum hemorrhage during delivery became a turning point that revealed my true purpose — a calling to philanthropy and social impact.

My Experience

The birth of my daughter was a painful journey. After delivery, I faced severe postpartum hemorrhage while my daughter was diagnosed with asphyxia (Blue Baby Syndrome) and was transferred to Massey Children's Hospital for intensive care. While I fought for my survival, she spent over a month in intensive care. I watched helplessly as her tiny body turned pale blue. During this time, I witnessed the stark reality that many families face; some children with similar conditions didn't survive. Though my child and I were fortunate, many women and children in Nigeria do not get this second chance.

The Problem

The rates of maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria, particularly from birth-related complications, are alarming. Many mothers and children lack access to quality healthcare, especially in cases like postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal asphyxia. This experience opened my eyes to the urgent need for better healthcare interventions. What began as a traumatic ordeal became the catalyst for my commitment to advocate for at-risk mothers and children to help them experience the joy of survival.

In every pain, there is a purpose. My experiences taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of giving back. I am dedicated to using my story to create an impact, ensuring that no woman or child faces these battles alone.
